Biography

Photo of Sue Wademan

Sue’s crowning achievement is to use colour in a way that ‘sings’. Whether it’s a simple monochromatic colour scheme like that in the quilt created here for the exhibition ‘a change in the weather’ with hand dyed, indigo fabrics, or a multi coloured four seasons landscape, (one of which now hangs in the Queenstown Airport), it will be expressive and captivating for the audience.

Born in Sydney, Australia, in the mid 50’s, Sue was brought up surrounded by colouring in pencils, materials for dressmaking, music, flowers, trees and books. All of which she loved.
Her career as an artist began in the advertising industry in the early 70’s, where she worked as a layout artist & designer both in Sydney and London. In 1976 this career gave way for her to become a full time mother of three, during which time she dabbled in pottery, puppetry and patchwork. It wasn’t until she made the move to Queenstown, New Zealand, with her husband (but without her 3 children), in the year 2000, that she got back to her art, and now Sue works full time creating fabric collage landscapes, acrylic textured paintings and most recently, creative knitting, for exhibitions, commissions and commercial galleries.
Sue has worked hard at getting her fabric collage ‘paintings’ recognized as an acceptable medium for competing in Art Shows around the South Island winning top awards in Nelson, Oamaru, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Alexandra and her beloved mountainous home of Queenstown, and will soon be bringing them to the Affordable Art Show in Wellington for which she has been selected from many artists to have an artist wall.

Many of Sue’s textile works are held in private collections both in NZ and Overseas. Sue has taught her unique style of fabric collage around the world in Australia, Japan, the UK, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Hawaii and Houston, U.S.A.
